The City of Mandan North Dakota is currently accepting applications for part time positions of:

Junior Firefighter – Part Time – Grade 16.

Salary Range: $18.99 – $28.49 per hour, DOE.

Position remains open on a continuous basis.
Please Note: This is an on-call position that averages two hours per week.

Duties Include:

  • Provides support to senior firefighters who are performing tasks during emergency assignments and training.
  • The work involves carrying equipment, assisting firefighters with gear, and relaying messages.
  • Junior Firefighters are unable to directly participate in emergency assignments, other than as a support function, they are still required to participate in department training and obtain skill levels as senior firefighters.
  • Assists senior firefighters, as a support function, during emergency assignments.
    *Attends classes and training sessions to improve firefighting and emergency medical skills.
    *Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the incident command system.
  • Knowledge of the International Fire Code.
  • Knowledge of modern firefighting practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern emergency medical practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern forms of fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of fire suppression and emergency rescue equipment and tools.
  • Skill in the use of computers and related software programs.
  • Skill in the provision of emergency medical care.
  • Ability to pass Firefighter physical fitness test.

Physical Activities Required:

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sound with no more than a 40 db loss @ 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discrimination in sound, such as when making the fine adjustments on machined parts.
  • Floor to Waist lift: up to 100 pounds lifting persons or hose/equipment; 30 – 50 pounds lifting hoses/equipment.
  • Waist to overhead lift: 30 – 50 pounds lifting hose, ladders, equipment.
  • Horizontal lift: up to 100 pounds lifting persons or hose/equipment; 30 – 50 pounds lifting hose/equipment.
  • Elevated work/reach light reaching to access manuals and resource material while sitting, 10 to 75 pounds while handling tools (saws, ax, extrication equipment) in up to 30 minute increments.
  • Forward bending/sitting: generally at desk/work station.
  • Rotation sitting: generally at desk/work station.
  • Crawl: performing CPR, working under head and smoke, equipment work and maintenance; 0 to 5 times per day in up to 30-minute increments.
  • Kneel/Crouch/Squat: working under heat and smoke, monitoring hose line, working with and lifting persons; 1 to 5 times per day in up to 20 minute increments.
  • Sitting tolerance: average 5 hours per day generally able to change position as needed (driving, doing computer and paperwork).
  • Standing: 2 to 12 hours in up to 120-minute blocks, change of position generally allowed.
  • Walking tolerance: average 2 to 3 miles per day in up to 350 foot increments (one city block) while doing inspections and pre-planning.
  • Stair climbing: Stairs in station, on emergency and during inspections.
  • Step ladder climbing: 8 to 102 feet, less than one time per day.
  • Vertical ladder climbing: during inspections and training.
  • Balance: working on uneven surfaces, unprotected heights, ladders ice.
  • Hand dexterity/coordination: gripping, pinching, handling tools and equipment including computer; may do sustained gripped up to 45 minutes while working hand line.

Physical Abilities Required:

  • While wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA, advancing water-filled hose-lines up to 2 ½ in, (65 mm) in diameter from fire apparatus to occupancy
  • Ability to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing personal protective ensembles under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose-lines
  • Functioning as an integral component of a team
