Outreach Services Assistant - Grade 9

Position Details

Hiring Range: $16.55 to $20.69/hour (Full Range: $16.55 to $24.83/hour)

Status: Non-Exempt/Full-time

Department:  Library

  • General Statement of Duties: Assists with planning and coordinating outreach services.
  • Supervision received: Under general supervision of the Outreach Services Coordinator and/or Library Director
  • Supervision Exercised: May provide guidance to the page or library volunteers


  • Assists with circulation of items at bookmobile stops
  • Maintains organization of room box program
  • Acts as backup driver for bookmobile if Bookmobile Driver Librarian is unavailable
  • Works circulation desk according to pre-set schedule, which includes mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends
  • Performs routine library procedures including checking library materials in/out, issuing new library cards, collecting fines, reader’s advisory, etc.
  • Greets and assists patrons in locating library materials
  • Maintains library shelves including weeding
  • Assists with covering and mending books
  • Provide outreach story times to county schools
  • Assists patrons with using library computers, including internet navigation, Microsoft Office products, and the library’s digital resources
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates outreach programs
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Experience in public contact or libraries preferred.
  • Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    • Knowledge of or ability to learn the Dewey Decimal System
    • Knowledge of or ability to learn the library’s ILS
    • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, applicable laws, regulations, rules, and library policies and procedures
    • General knowledge of technology as it affects library operations
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions from staff and public
    • Ability to accurately shelve books, periodicals, and other library materials
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
    • Ability to use a computer
    • Ability to work flexible hours
    • Ability to work independently
    • Ability to drive in a variety of weather and road conditions
    • Ability to safely drive and maneuver a 29 ft vehicle
    • Ability to stay on task and finish work in a timely manner
    • Maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and co-workers
    • Interact and respond appropriately to patrons
    • Contribute to a safe workplace environment
    • Must possess a valid Class D North Dakota driver’s license. A clean driving record is required.


  • Ability to lift and carry 30-50lbs on a regular basis

  • Ability to load and unload bookmobile in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception


  • Required to work in close quarters – 8’ x 20’; possibly without heat or air conditioning, no immediate access to restrooms when on the bookmobile.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet and typically will not require shouting to be heard above the ambient noise level. Duties require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and talking or hearing. Duties require occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying items, keyboarding, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Weights up to 50 pounds are encountered. Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Work, such as emptying the outside book drop, or loading and unloading personal vehicles or the bookmobile, may be performed throughout the year and is subject to conditions such as high or low temperatures, rain/snow, or slick walking surfaces. Reading materials and verbal instructions require complex interpretation. Hazards are considered minor and controllable, but may include exposure to human error and angry/hostile humans. Must be able to transport oneself to work-related meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.
