Assistant Library Director - Grade 20
The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of:
Assistant Library Director - Grade 20.
Salary Hiring Range starting at $23.54 per hour.

1. Description of Work
1.1. General Statement of Duties: Responsible for planning and coordinating outreach services and assisting the Library Director with the daily operations of the library and serving in the capacity of Director in his/her absence
1.2. Supervision Received: Under general supervision of the Library Director
1.3. Supervision Exercised: Directly manages and supervises the Outreach Driver Librarian and Outreach Services Assistant. Assists in leadership and supervision of all library personnel, contractual employees, and volunteers
2. Major Duties
2.1. Assumes duties of Director in his/her absence
2.2. Assists in leadership and supervision of all personnel, contractual employees, and volunteers. Responsibilities may include coaching and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
2.3. Assists with collection development, updating the library website, and coordinating building maintenance and repairs
2.4. Creates instructional materials for staff and public use
2.5. Plans, coordinates, markets and supervises all outreach services
2.6. Develops partnerships with schools, senior facilities, and various local agencies to determine outreach needs
2.7. Develops two bookmobile schedules per year by coordinating dates and times to provide best use of sites’ location needs, departmental service, and vehicle continuance
2.8. Oversees maintenance of outreach vehicles
2.9. Maintains outreach statistical information
2.10. Serves as passport acceptance agent; renews certification annually
2.11. Serves as proctor for tests/exams
2.12. Serves as liaison to the Friends of Morton Mandan Public Library
2.13. Participates in activities of professional organizations, networks, conferences, and workshops to maintain knowledge of new developments in the library profession
2.14. Performs other duties as assigned
3. Minimum Qualifications
3.1. Education and Experience: Master’s degree in library science and a minimum of 3 years of library experience with 2 years of management/supervisory experience. Preference will be given to an ALA-accredited Master’s degree. Proficiency in public contact work and computer skills.
4. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
4.1. Knowledge of or ability to learn the Dewey Decimal System
4.2. Knowledge of or ability to learn the library’s ILS
4.3. Knowledge or ability to learn applicable laws, regulations, rules, and library policies and procedures
4.4. Knowledge of proper grammar and the use of English in speaking and writing
4.5. Knowledge and proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Publisher), use of library data systems and databases
4.6. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes identifying customer needs, meeting standards for service and customer satisfaction.
4.7. Knowledge and understanding of reference tools, research skills, general literature of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals, and philosophy of services
4.8. Knowledge of the principles and practices of library management
4.9. Knowledge of city and county government
4.10. General knowledge of technology as it affects library operations
4.11. Ability to think and act in a professional manner
4.12. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
4.13. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
4.14. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standard situations
4.15. Ability to prioritize work flow

4.33. Must possess a valid Class D North Dakota Driver’s License, a clean driving record is required
5. The physical activities of this position are:
5.1. Extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and talking or hearing.
5.2. Occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying/moving items, driving, keyboarding, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
5.3. Lifting/carrying 30-50 lbs. and exerting 50 pounds of force.
5.4. Ascending and descending steps while carrying 30-50 lbs.
5.5. Pushing and pulling library book trucks weighing 100-300 lbs.
5.6. Using close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
6. The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position are:
6.1. The worker is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions: Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Work, such as emptying the outside book drop, or loading and unloading personal vehicles or the bookmobile, may be performed throughout the year and is subject to conditions such as high or low temperatures, rain/snow, or slick walking surfaces. Required to work in close quarters – 8’ x 20’; possibly without heat or air conditioning. No immediate access to restrooms when on the bookmobile.
6.2. The worker is subject to noise: The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet and typically will not require shouting to be heard above the ambient noise level.
6.3. The worker is subject to hazards: The hazards are considered to be minor and controllable, but may include exposure to human error and angry/hostile humans.
