The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for a full-time position of:
Equipment Operator I – Grade 15.
Salary Hiring Range starting at $18.45 per hour.

1. Description of Work
1.1. General Statement of Duties: Performs skilled work in the operation of heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, rollers, sweepers, front-end loaders, boom trucks, snowplows and blowers, which entail considerable manipulative difficulty in operation. Operation of assigned equipment is a full-time or predominate task, but normally other work is performed. Work is performed independently within established policies, procedures, and standard equipment operation techniques. This is the first level in a two level classification series. This classification is distinguished by the increased scope, variety and complexity of the work performed.
1.2. Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent.
1.3. Supervision Exercised: May provide guidance to other Equipment Operators, lower level maintenance workers, and laborers. May be a lead person on a project basis.
2. Major Duties
2.1. Operates Conveyor to mix Salt Sand, operates motor grader, snow blower, front-end loader with reversible plow and attachment skid steer and sanding trucks. Cleans City streets and right-of-ways by driving safely in and around parked or moving vehicles and pedestrians to assure safe removal and control of snow and ice. Required to be on call to preform emergency work, if needed.
2.2. Operates street sweepers to assure clean streets and operates lawn mowers, riding and tractor mounted, to assure a groomed appearance of street right of ways and street ditches. Also operates various types of heavy equipment to pick up debris such as sweeping tree branches ext. from grass pickup sites.
2.3. Operates roller, chipper, pager, oil distributer, crack router, asphalt melter/applicator, and other related equipment; Calibrates equipment and calculates quantity of materials to assure quality construction and repair of streets. Also operates various hand tools.
2.4. Operates aerial lift trucks and other aerial devices, installs signs and barricades, operates line painting equipment to paint street marking and crosswalks according to the uniform traffic control and devices codes to assure safety of citizens and employees and to assure paint and markings for curbs, streets and crosswalks are according to NDDOT standards. Repairs and maintains curb catch basins, and storm drains.
2.5. Operates compactor to crush and pack household garbage and other related debris; distributes and levels trash for proper landfill management; operates transfer station.
2.6. Operates motor grader, front-end loader, compactor, and trucks at the landfill to maintain clean sites for compost, concrete, asphalt, trees and sludge. Performs maintenance duties including building maintenance and grounds keeping. Changes transfer station boxes.
2.7. Cleans and maintains Public Works and Landfill shop. Assists with skilled or technical maintenance, major repairs and welding, fabricating parts along with other duties to assure equipment is serviced, maintained, and operational at all times. Such as checks, cleans, services vehicles and equipment; applies grease and changes fluid; keeps records of maintenance performed.
2.8. Required to work various schedules that includes nights, weekends, and holidays; respond to after-hours emergencies, modified workweeks, subject to on call hours as assigned.
2.9. Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required.
3. Minimum Qualifications
3.1. High school diploma (GED)
3.2. 12 months experience in the operation and limited maintenance of heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
3.3. A valid Class B North Dakota Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement is required within the probationary period.
4. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
4.1. Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics and servicing of a variety of heavy automotive and related equipment.
4.2. Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
4.3. Considerable knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
4.4. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
4.5. Ability to make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
4.6. Ability to perform arduous tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions.
4.7. Skill in the operation and servicing of one or more types of heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment.
4.8. Skill in the operation of various tools.
4.9. Skill in communication, interpersonal skill as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to provide and/or receive work direction.
4.10. Knowledge of landfill operations.
4.11. Knowledge of street maintenance procedures and methods, including knowledge of traffic signing and barricading regulations for public and personnel safety while working with equipment and performing maintenance duties in the public right-of-way.
